What Fibergate Does

Where Fiber Meets Your Home

Explain the equipment at the fiber gateway — the ONT, the router, and everything between the street and your Wi-Fi — including install day, speed fixes, and security settings.

📦

What an ONT Does

The optical network terminal converts light on glass into the internet your devices use — here is how.

📶

Gateway vs. Router

One box or two? What the provider's combo gateway does, and when separating the jobs improves things.

🔌

Install Day, Explained

Where the fiber enters, where the ONT mounts, and the decisions to make while the technician is still there.

⚡

Speed Troubleshooting

Paying for a gigabit and seeing 300? The gateway, cabling, and Wi-Fi band checks that find the loss.

🧰

Use Your Own Router

Bridge mode, bypassing the rental gateway, and picking hardware that keeps up with fiber speeds.

🔒

Gateway Security

The settings worth changing on day one: admin password, firmware updates, guest network, and remote access off.

How Fibergate Works

From signup to value in 3 steps

1

Fiber reaches the wall

The drop cable from the street terminates at the ONT — the true edge of the fiber network.

2

The gateway takes over

Gateway or router turns that connection into wired ports and Wi-Fi for the household.

3

You tune what's yours

Placement, band settings, and security options — the parts of the chain you control — decide the experience.

Frequently Asked

What is the difference between the ONT and the router?

The ONT translates the optical signal into an electrical one; the router shares that connection with your devices. Some providers combine both in one gateway box — same two jobs, one shell.

Can I use my own router with fiber?

Usually yes. Most fiber services let you connect your own router to the ONT or put the provider's gateway in bridge mode. Check the provider's policy before buying hardware.

Why is my Wi-Fi slower than my fiber plan?

Wi-Fi is almost always the bottleneck, not the fiber. Distance, walls, old devices, and crowded bands cut wireless speed — a wired test at the gateway shows what is really being delivered.
